Sample papers and practice by level

The DELF has four independent diplomas. You can enter directly at your chosen level. France Éducation international provides the official papers. The short French exercises below are our own.

DELF A1

Write a short message and ask for what you need

In the 30-minute writing paper, you fill in a form and write a message of at least 40 words. The speaking test lasts about 5 to 7 minutes, with 10 minutes to prepare. You introduce yourself, ask questions and act out a short exchange.

Writing practice: arrange to meet a friend

Try it. Write to your friend Lou. Give the day and time you arrive in Nantes, suggest a meeting place and ask if it works for her.

Example opening

Salut Lou, j’arrive à Nantes samedi à dix heures. On se retrouve devant la gare ?

This opening gives Lou a time and a place. To build it into a 40-word message, add what you plan to do together and ask whether she is free.

Speaking practice: buy a notebook

Try it aloud. You are speaking to a shop assistant. Use vous, ask the price of a notebook and say whether you want to buy it.

Example exchange

Bonjour, combien coûte ce cahier, s’il vous plaît ?
Trois euros.
D’accord, je le prends. Merci !

In the last line, le stands for ce cahier. With a feminine noun such as cette trousse, you would say je la prends.

DELF A2

Tell someone what happened and explain a preference

You have 45 minutes to write two texts of at least 60 words each. The speaking test lasts about 6 to 8 minutes, with 10 minutes to prepare. Expect an interview, a short talk on a familiar topic and an interaction.

Writing practice: describe a day trip

Try it. A friend asks about your weekend. Tell them where you went, how the weather changed your plans and what you enjoyed.

Example opening

Samedi, nous avons pris le train jusqu’à Rouen. Il pleuvait, alors nous avons visité un musée.

Il pleuvait describes the weather in the background. Nous avons visité tells your friend what you did. Add one detail from the museum and say why you liked it.

Speaking practice: explain how you get to work

Try it aloud. Compare two ways of getting to work. Which do you prefer, and when do you use the other one?

Example excerpt

Je préfère le vélo parce que j’habite près du bureau. Quand il pleut, je prends le bus.

Parce que gives the reason for your preference. Quand tells the listener what makes you change your routine. Swap in your own route and reason.

DELF B1

Give your opinion and handle a change of plan

The writing paper gives you 45 minutes for one text of at least 160 words. The speaking test lasts about 15 minutes. It includes an interview, an interaction and a discussion of your viewpoint. The 10 minutes of preparation apply to the viewpoint task.

Download B1 example 1. Start with the candidate paper (PDF). After the task, use the matching answer key (PDF) and listening transcript (PDF). The recording is on the official B1 samples page above.

Writing practice: ask for later opening hours

Try it. Your local sports centre has started closing earlier. Write to the manager, explain how the change affects you and suggest a practical solution.

Example excerpt

Depuis que le gymnase ferme à dix-huit heures, je ne peux plus y aller après le travail. Serait-il possible de le laisser ouvert le jeudi soir ?

Depuis que introduces a change that still affects you. The conditional serait-il possible makes a request to the manager. Develop your proposal by explaining who else could use the gym on Thursday evenings.

Speaking practice: rearrange a cancelled visit

Try it aloud. At a tourist office, an employee tells you that your guided walk has been cancelled. Address the employee as vous. Ask for another time and explain when you need to leave.

Example response

Je comprends. Avez-vous une autre visite demain matin ? Je dois prendre le train à midi.

Now have your partner offer 11:30. Keep the exchange going by asking how long the visit lasts before you decide whether to accept.

DELF B2

Build an argument and defend it when challenged

You have 1 hour to argue a position in a text of at least 250 words. For speaking, you have 30 minutes to prepare and about 20 minutes to present and discuss a viewpoint based on a short document.

Writing practice: weigh the cost of a proposal

Try it. Your town is deciding whether to keep its library open in the evening. Write to the council. Take a position, acknowledge a cost and propose a way to test the idea.

Example excerpt

Certes, ouvrir tous les soirs coûterait cher. On pourrait toutefois commencer par le jeudi et compter les visiteurs pendant deux mois avant de décider.

Certes acknowledges the cost. Toutefois introduces an answer to that objection. The two-month trial gives the council something concrete to accept or reject.

Speaking practice: respond to a counterargument

Read this original practice brief. Pour alléger les cartables, un collège envisage de remplacer les manuels par des tablettes. Les familles devraient acheter les appareils.

Try it aloud. Explain who benefits, who pays and what you would change. Then answer a partner who asks whether the school can afford your proposal.

Example excerpt

Alléger les cartables me semble utile. Mais si chaque famille doit acheter une tablette, certains élèves risquent de se retrouver sans matériel. Le collège pourrait prêter les appareils, d’abord à une seule classe.

After si, doit states the condition. Pourrait offers an alternative. For the follow-up, explain how the smaller trial would affect the budget.

Try a listening question and a reading question

Listening: meet two colleagues

Listen to Solène and Antoine. Who has just joined the team, and which job does that person do?

Read the French transcript

Solène : Bonjour, je suis Solène. Je suis la nouvelle comptable.

Antoine : Bienvenue ! Moi, c’est Antoine. J’ai trente-huit ans et je suis responsable du service.

Solène : Tu as un bureau à cet étage ?

Antoine : Oui, et nous avons une salle de pause juste à côté.

Check the listening answer

Solène is the new accountant. Listen for la nouvelle comptable in her first turn. Antoine welcomes her and says that he runs the department.

Reading: a change of plan

Read this notice from a cycling club.

Le cours de vélo prévu mercredi est reporté à samedi, à 10 h. Rendez-vous dans la cour. Les inscriptions restent valables. Si vous avez besoin d’un vélo, signalez-le à l’accueil avant vendredi midi.

Nadia signed up for Wednesday and has her own bike. Does she need to contact the club before Friday? When and where should she go?

Check the reading answer

Nadia can go straight to the courtyard on Saturday at 10. Les inscriptions restent valables means her booking still counts. The Friday deadline applies to people who need to borrow a bike.

How the DELF is marked

Listening, reading, writing and speaking each count for 25 points. To pass, you need at least 50 out of 100 overall and at least 5 out of 25 in every skill. A score of 4 in speaking still falls short even if the four scores add up to 60.

Study planner

Plan your next seven days

Keep one official sample for the end of the week. Use the first one to find what needs work.

Your practice week

  1. Day 1
    Try one task cold

Choose one official task at your level and follow its timing. Put a mark next to anything you guessed.

  2. Day 2
    Listen twice with a purpose

Listen once for the situation, then listen for the detail that answers the question. Check the transcript afterwards.

  3. Day 3
Find the evidence in a text

Answer a reading question. Underline the words that support your answer before looking at the key.

  4. Day 4
    Write for a reader

Start with the writing prompt for your level. Name your reader and tick each request as you answer it.

  5. Day 5
    Say it aloud

Try the speaking prompt for your level. Ask a partner to interrupt with a question and practise answering it.

  6. Day 6
    Return to the difficult skill

Try a different task of the same kind you chose on day one. Write down which part you now handle on your own.

  7. Day 7
    Try a fresh timed task

Use the second paper. Mark listening and reading with its key. For writing and speaking, check the official criteria and ask for feedback on one point.
