Privacy Policy for Frenchtoenglish.com
This page describes what personal data Frenchtoenglish.com actually collects, why it is held, who else can see it, how long it is kept, and how you can have it removed. It describes the real behaviour of this website rather than a generic template.
Frenchtoenglish.com is a small publishing operation. Almost everything on the site can be read without giving us anything at all. Personal data reaches us in three situations only: you subscribe to our emails, you ask for a quiz result, or you buy the book. Each of those is described below in plain terms.
- What we collect, and at which precise moment.
- Why we are allowed to hold it.
- Which third parties are involved and what they receive.
- How long each category of data is retained.
- Your rights, and the practical way to exercise them.
What we collect, and when
Reading this website requires nothing from you. No account, no email, no registration. The three situations below are the only ones in which personal data is recorded, and each is triggered by an action you take deliberately.
When you subscribe to our emails
- Collected: your email address, the page and section you subscribed from, the date, your IP address and browser user agent, and a record of your consent.
- How: our own subscription form. We use double opt-in, so nothing is confirmed until you click the link in the confirmation email.
The IP address and user agent are kept for one reason: proving that a given subscription was genuine and blocking automated abuse of the form. They are never used to profile you.
When you ask for a quiz result
- Collected: your email address, any name or profile field you chose to fill in, your score, and your individual answers.
- How: our own quiz engine. Scoring happens on our server, which is why the answers are stored.
You can take every quiz on this site and see your score without giving an email. The email is only required if you ask us to send the result.
When you buy the book
- Collected by our payment provider: your name, email, billing details and payment method.
- Collected by us: the fact of the order and the email needed to deliver the file and honour the refund guarantee.
We never see, handle or store your card number. Payment is processed by SureCart, and card data goes to their payment processor directly.
Automatically, on every visit
- Server logs: IP address, date, page requested, browser user agent. Standard web server records, kept by our host.
- Security: failed login attempts and the country an IP belongs to, used to block automated attacks.
These are technical records, not a marketing tool. Nobody reads them unless something breaks or the site is under attack.
Why we are allowed to hold it
Under the General Data Protection Regulation, every piece of personal data must rest on a legal basis. Ours are straightforward.
Your consent
Email subscriptions and quiz results rest on consent, given by a deliberate action and confirmed by email. Consent can be withdrawn at any moment, and withdrawing it is a single click.
Performance of a contract
When you buy the book, we need your email to deliver it and to apply the 30-day money-back guarantee. That is not consent, it is the contract itself.
Legitimate interest
Server logs, anti-spam measures and login protection rest on our legitimate interest in keeping the website available and not being overrun by automated traffic.
Legal obligation
Records connected to a sale, such as invoices, are retained for the period required by applicable accounting and tax rules.
Who else is involved
We do not sell personal data, and we do not trade or rent mailing lists. A short list of service providers does see some of it, because the website could not run otherwise.
Hosting
OVH SAS, Roubaix, France. The site and its database sit on a server in France. Server logs are held there.
Payments
SureCart handles checkout and payment. Your card details go to their processor and never transit through this website.
Measurement
Google Analytics and Jetpack Stats record aggregate audience figures: pages viewed, approximate location, device type. These involve transfers outside the European Union under the providers’ own frameworks.
Email delivery and affiliate links
Emails are sent through an external SMTP provider. Some links to books are Amazon affiliate links, which means Amazon may set its own cookies once you land on their site. What happens there is governed by Amazon’s privacy policy, not ours.
How long we keep it
Data is kept for as long as it serves the purpose it was collected for, and no longer.
Subscribers
Until you unsubscribe, plus a short period during which the record is marked as unsubscribed so that we do not accidentally contact you again. Addresses that never confirm are removed.
Quiz results
Kept while they remain useful for improving the tests. Removed on request, immediately and without asking you why.
Orders
Kept for the period required by accounting and tax rules, which is longer than we would otherwise choose and is not at our discretion.
Technical logs
Server and security logs rotate automatically after a short period. They are not archived.
Your rights, and how to use them
If you are in the European Union or the United Kingdom you have the rights listed below. We apply them to everyone who writes to us, wherever they are, because maintaining two standards would be more trouble than it is worth.
What you can ask for
- Access: a copy of what we hold about you.
- Rectification: correction of anything inaccurate.
- Erasure: deletion of your data.
- Portability: your data in a machine-readable file.
- Objection: an end to a given use of it.
- Withdrawal of consent: at any time, without justification.
How to do it
Write to contact@frenchtoenglish.com. We answer within one month, and usually within a few days. You do not need to explain your reasons or use any particular wording.
Unsubscribing
Every email we send carries an unsubscribe link that works immediately and requires no explanation. If it ever fails, tell us and we will remove you by hand.
If you are not satisfied
You may lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority. In France this is the CNIL. We would rather you wrote to us first, but it is your right either way.
Cookies and measurement
This website sets a small number of cookies. None of them are advertising cookies, and we do not run retargeting.
Necessary
Cookies required for the shopping basket, checkout and, if you are an administrator, for staying logged in. The site cannot function without these.
Measurement
Google Analytics and Jetpack Stats set cookies to count visits and understand which guides are read. You can block them with your browser settings or any standard blocker without losing access to anything on this site.
Local storage
Some interactive elements, such as remembering that a promotional message has already been shown to you, use your browser’s local storage rather than a cookie. Clearing your browser data removes them.
Do Not Track
We do not build behavioural profiles, we do not sell audience data, and there is no advertising network embedded in these pages.
Children, changes, and contact
Two short points, and how to reach a human.
Children
This website is written for adults learning French. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has subscribed, write to us and we will delete the record.
Changes to this policy
When the site changes what it collects, this page is updated and the date at the top changes with it. We do not quietly broaden what we do behind an unchanged page.
Contact
contact@frenchtoenglish.com reaches us for any question about this policy, any request concerning your data, or any correction to the site.
