❓ FAQ — Learn French

Clear answers for beginners (A0–A2) and improvers (B1), all based on Roger’s French to English method. Explore the quick links below or open a question for details.

Is this for complete beginners? 🌱

Yes — everything at French to English is designed for A0–A2 learners, including people who only know “bonjour” or feel they are “terrible at languages”. Roger built the method specifically for English speakers who want clear explanations, not grammar shock.

Instead of throwing you into 100% French from day one, Roger explains the logic in English first, then shows you how it works in real French sentences. You learn step by step: pronunciation basics, core grammar, and useful phrases you can actually say on a trip, in class, or in everyday life.

Roger learnt French as an adult himself, after growing up in an English-speaking family in Germany and then moving to France. He knows exactly where English speakers get stuck and has built every guide, article, and lesson around those roadblocks.

  • Level focus: A0 absolute beginners, false beginners, and A1–A2 improvers.
  • Age: mainly adult learners, but motivated teens can use the same materials.
  • Style: calm, structured, and friendly — no shaming, no pressure to “perform”.

A typical beginner path is: start with the A1 Foundations Guide for structure, use the free Resources & Learning Center for extra practice, and optionally book a €9 trial lesson with Roger if you want live help and pronunciation feedback.

What’s inside the A1 Foundations guide? 📘

The A1 Foundations Guide is Roger’s complete roadmap from A0 to solid A1. It’s a PDF + audio pack written in clear English, with everything organised so you always know what to do next.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • Step-by-step units that build from the very basics (greetings, introducing yourself, numbers) to everyday situations like cafés, small talk, directions, and travel.
  • Pronunciation training with native audio so you can copy real sounds, not guess from spelling. French is explained using comparisons to English so you actually understand why it sounds that way.
  • Around 400 essential words and phrases grouped by theme, all chosen from real conversations rather than random textbook lists.
  • Core A1 grammar — present tense, articles, gender, questions, negation, basic pronouns, and starter past tense patterns — explained in everyday English, with plenty of examples.
  • Exercises with answer keys so you can self-check, plus mini reviews to confirm when you’re ready to move on.
  • A simple 12-week study plan that tells you exactly which pages and audio to use each week.

Roger wrote the guide after thousands of hours of 1-to-1 lessons with English-speaking adults. Every explanation comes from real student questions, not theory. You can use the guide completely on your own, or combine it with lessons so Roger can coach you through the plan.

How does the €9 trial lesson work? 🎟️

The €9 trial is a 25-minute online session with Roger, your trilingual French coach and author of the French to English guides. It’s there to help you start smart, not to test you or put you on the spot.

What happens step by step:

  • You choose a time on the booking page that already shows in your local time. After payment, you receive a confirmation email with the video link.
  • At the start of the call, Roger asks a few questions about your goals, past experience, and how you like to learn. If you’re A0, this part can be entirely in English.
  • You do a quick level check (gentle, not an exam). Roger listens for pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary patterns so he sees where you are on the A0–B1 scale.
  • Roger gives you targeted pronunciation tips and small corrections you can start using immediately — usually on sounds English speakers find tricky.
  • Finally, you leave with a personalised mini study plan: what to focus on first, which resources to use (for example the A1 Guide, specific Learning Center articles, or weekly lessons), and how many minutes per week to aim for.

There is no obligation to continue. The trial is simply a low-risk way to meet Roger, ask questions, and see if his style works for you before you book more lessons.

How do I book lessons and handle time zones? 🌍

All private lessons are booked online and the system automatically shows times in your local time zone. You don’t have to convert anything manually.

To book a lesson:

  • Go to the Private Lessons section and choose your format: €9 Trial, Weekly 1-to-1, 4-Week Booster, or DELF Prep.
  • On the product page, click the booking button. You’ll see a calendar with available slots that have already been converted to your local time (whether you’re in Europe, the US, Asia, or elsewhere).
  • Pick a time, fill in your details, and complete payment. You’ll receive an email confirmation with the video link and the date/time again in your local time.

Lessons are taught live online using common tools (usually Zoom or Google Meet). If you sync your calendar, you’ll see the appointment there as well, which makes time-zone mix-ups much less likely.

If you’re in a very different time zone from France, there are usually morning and evening options so you can still find a slot that fits work or family life. Once you settle into Weekly 1-to-1 lessons, many learners keep the same day and time each week so it becomes a stable habit.

Can I reschedule or cancel a lesson? 🔁

Yes — you can reschedule for free up to 24 hours before the lesson start time. This protects Roger’s calendar and still gives you flexibility as a busy adult learner.

Rescheduling:

  • Use the reschedule link in your confirmation email or contact us using the details in your order. As long as you are more than 24 hours before the lesson, you can move it without extra cost.
  • You’ll receive a new confirmation with the updated date and time and a fresh video link if needed.

Late cancellations (<24h) and no-shows:

  • If you cancel or don’t attend within 24 hours of the start time, the lesson is normally counted as used and can’t be refunded. At that point it’s extremely hard to offer the slot to another learner.
  • If there is a serious issue (for example technical problems on our side), we’ll work with you to find a fair solution.

For longer programmes like DELF Prep or the 4-Week Booster, the same 24-hour rule applies to each scheduled lesson. Many learners pick a fixed schedule at the start so rescheduling is rarely needed.

If you’re ever unsure what’s possible, just reply to your confirmation email and explain the situation. The aim is always to keep things fair for both you and Roger while respecting his preparation time.

Do I need any materials or software? 💻

You don’t need anything complicated. Most learners use a combination of Roger’s A1 Foundations Guide, a notebook, and a basic setup for online calls.

For guides & self-study:

  • The A1 Foundations Guide is a PDF you can read on laptop, tablet, or phone. You can also print it if you prefer paper.
  • Audio files (MP3) are included so you can train your pronunciation with native recordings — headphones help, but built-in speakers are usually fine at the start.
  • A simple notebook or digital notes app is enough for writing practice and vocabulary lists.

For live lessons:

  • A stable internet connection, microphone, and camera (built-in laptop ones are normally fine).
  • Zoom or Google Meet — there is no special software to buy; links are sent automatically when you book.
  • If you own the A1 Guide, Roger may refer to certain pages or exercises, but he can also adapt lessons if you are using other materials.

Many learners also use the Library to pick a graded reader once they reach early A1. Reading short, level-appropriate stories in parallel with lessons helps vocabulary and confidence grow much faster.

Are lessons recorded? 🎥

Lesson recording is optional and only done with your explicit consent. Some learners love re-watching parts of a session to copy pronunciation or review corrections; others prefer not to be recorded at all. Both options are completely fine.

If you choose to record:

  • Roger will confirm on the call that you’re happy to be recorded and remind you how the video will be used.
  • Recordings are normally kept for a short time (for example around a week) so you can replay key parts, take notes, and then move on. They are not used for marketing or shared publicly.

If you prefer not to record, that’s also completely okay. Roger will simply write key structures and corrections into the chat or a shared document so you still have a clear written record of what you practised.

Whichever option you choose, the focus is always on feeling safe enough to speak, make mistakes, and ask questions freely — especially at A0–A2, where confidence is just as important as grammar.

How long to reach A1 level? ⏳

It depends on your schedule and starting point, but many adult learners reach a solid A1 in around 8–12 weeks if they follow a simple routine and stay consistent.

A realistic, structured path might look like:

  • Daily self-study: 25–45 minutes a day using the A1 Foundations Guide and audio, plus occasional articles from the Learning Center. Short, regular sessions work better than rare “marathons”.
  • Weekly lesson with Roger: one 45-minute 1-to-1 session per week to practise speaking, fix pronunciation, and get feedback on what you’re studying.
  • Light revision: 5–10 minutes most days to quickly review vocabulary and key structures from previous weeks.

If you can only manage 15–20 minutes a day, you’ll still progress, but expect the timeline to be longer (for example 3–4 months rather than 2). On the other hand, if you combine the 4-Week Booster with focused self-study, you may move faster through beginner material.

Remember: A1 is not “fluent” — it’s the point where you can introduce yourself, handle simple travel situations, understand very common phrases, and start joining basic conversations. From there, Roger’s method and resources help you bridge into A2 and B1 with the same clear logic.

Refunds and guarantees 🛡️

French to English is run like a small, human-scale school: the aim is to be fair both to you as a learner and to Roger as a teacher. That’s why guides and lessons have slightly different policies.

Guides (digital products):

Digital products like the A1 Foundations Guide normally come with a clear refund window (for example around 14–30 days) as long as only a small portion has been used. The idea is simple: if you buy a guide, open it, and realise it genuinely isn’t what you need, you shouldn’t feel stuck. Check the dedicated Refund page or your order email for the exact, up-to-date conditions.

Lessons (live services):

  • Once a lesson is successfully completed, it’s considered delivered — you’ve used Roger’s time, preparation, and expertise.
  • Lessons cancelled less than 24 hours before the start time are normally not refundable, because that slot can’t be offered to another learner.
  • If there is a technical problem or something clearly on our side, we’ll work with you to reschedule or find a fair solution.

If you ever feel something is wrong — for example the level is off, the material doesn’t match the description, or personal circumstances change — write to us. Roger prefers a short conversation and a fair outcome over strict rules that don’t reflect reality.

How are guides delivered? Is the Library affiliated? 📩

When you buy a guide like A1 Foundations, delivery is instant and completely digital. As soon as payment is confirmed, you receive an email with a secure download link and (if you create an account) access in your customer area.

Guide delivery:

  • Download the PDF to your device or cloud storage — you can use it on laptop, tablet, or phone, and print it if you prefer paper.
  • Download the audio (MP3) so you can listen offline or add it to your favourite audio app for repeated practice.
  • Updates or small improvements may be added over time. When that happens, existing customers normally get access to the updated version without paying again.

About the Library and affiliate links:

The Library lists books and resources available on Amazon and other platforms. These are recommendations personally selected by Roger — textbooks, graded readers, pronunciation guides, and DELF prep books that actually work for English speakers.

Some links are affiliate links, which means French to English may earn a small commission if you purchase a book through them. The price you pay stays the same; it’s simply a way to support the project while keeping lots of resources and articles free for learners.

Roger only recommends books he has used himself or with students. If something doesn’t live up to expectations, it doesn’t stay in the Library.
